The term "flying saucer" was named after UFOs that "skipped like saucers," but that looked like boomerangs. The media frenzy that followed this first sighting inspired encounters with craft that looked like saucers. The relationship between media and sightings has always been important to the phenomenon.

Little attention, however, has been paid to the importance of the photographs of UFOs that appear in television and movies. Whether or not they are in-universe hoaxes or legitimate evidence, their presence on the screen makes them examples of the UFO lexicon seen by more people than most “genuine” photographs. Screen Saucers is oriented towards creating an archive of these photographs. These photographs are the direct result of many hours spent watching films and tv episodes that might contain an addition to the collection.
